Seminar on Agricultural Mechanization and Commercial Agriculture holds

Organized by the collaborative effort of the Policy Study Institute (PSI) and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), a seminar that focuses on the theme ‘Agricultural Mechanization and Commercial Agriculture’ held on 25 March 2019 at Best Western Hotel, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The seminar commenced with welcoming remarks by Mr. Ahmed Abtew, Director General, PSI and opening speech delivered by H.E.  Mr. Daisuke Matsunaga, Japanese Ambassador to Ethiopia.  Both speakers stressed the importance of mechanizing as well as commercializing Ethiopia’s agriculture and maintaining the strong partnership between Ethiopia and Japan in moving forward the agricultural mechanization and commercialization efforts of the country.

The seminar involved two presentations and follow-up discussions. The first presentation focused on: ‘Role of Agricultural Mechanization in Economic Development’. It was presented by Keijiro Otsuka, Professor of Development Economics, Kobe University, Japan and President, Japanese Association for Development Economics. The second paper covered the topic ‘Performance of Large and Medium Scale Commercial Agriculture in Ethiopia: Opportunities and Challenges’. This paper was presented by Dr. Tadesse Kuma, Senior Researcher and Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Research Centre at PSI.

 

Japanee’s Ambasador

The seminar gathered about fifty participants drawn from the Ethiopian government ministries, non-governmental organizations, research institutes, universities, private companies and other stakeholders.
