PSI conducts CRGE monitoring and evaluation system data validation workshop.

The Environment and Climate Research Centre (ECRC) at Policy Studies Institute (PSI) conducted a validation workshop on Generating Baseline Data for the CRGE Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) System on August 30, 2019 at Elilly International Hotel, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

With the launch of the CRGE strategy in 2011, Ethiopia has embarked on a uniquely ambitious green development path. The CRGE strategy has been mainstreamed into the GTP II and thus become a central element of the country’s development plan. By mainstreaming the goals and objectives of a CRGE into Ethiopia’s five year planning process, the country is aiming to achieve something that has not really been done before: a rapid, inclusive, and green economic transformation. One of the components of the bigger project on Supporting CRGE Implementation with Knowledge Management and Research   is generating baseline data for CRGE monitoring and evaluation system. This project started in June 2017 funded by Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). It involves: development of baseline data that goes back as 2011 to selected CRGE indicators; preparation of performance indicator sheet; capacity building to CRGE M&E personnel of sector ministries; and setting up dynamic infrastructure to support.

Dr. Yohannes Ayalew

This workshop commenced with welcoming remarks of Dr. Yohannes Ayalew, Deputy Director General, PSI and Head, Macroeconomic and Finance Policy Division at PSI. In his welcoming address, Dr. Yohannes highlighted the significance of the baseline data generated for CRGE monitoring and evaluation system and called for all stakeholders to utilize the data in their future practices relating to CRGE. He also thanked researchers involved in the project for the successful work done and Sida for funding the project.

H.E. Professor Fekadu Beyene

In this event, an opening speech was delivered by H.E. Professor Fekadu Beyene, Commissioner, EFCCC. Professor Fekadu too stressed the importance of developing an efficient and enhanced monitoring and evaluation tool with defined indicators to support the CRGE M&E system and building the necessary infrastructure and capacity is paramount to achieve the national agenda and evaluating the status of the country’s efforts in meeting the CRGE targets.

He also acknowledged PSI and Sida’s contribution in making the project a success.

The workshop involved presentations and parallel session discussions. In the presentation session, background to and description of CRGE Monitoring and evaluation system was presented and the database was demonstrated. The parallel sessions were organized in such a way that workshop participants discuss on indicators and the data for the sectors included (Agriculture, Water, Energy, Industry, Transport, Urban and Health) in the data base.

Participants of this workshop included stakeholders gathered from government and non-government organizations, research institutions, and academia.
