Officials from BBC Media Action Ethiopia visited PSI

Officials from BBC Media Action Ethiopia visited the  Policy Studies Institute (PSI) on December 16, 2022. The officials said that BBC Media Action Ethiopia is the extension of BBC World Services and focuses on the role of media for development.

Tsilat Yewondowssen, Senior Project Manager of BBC Media Action Ethiopia, explained that BBC Media Action has been working in Ethiopia since 2001 to provide people with reliable, trustworthy information to help them keep themselves and their families healthy and to build the capacity of local media and public interest journalists.

She said BBC Media Action Ethiopia is implementing several programs such as the BabyWASH project, which encourages mothers and fathers of children under the age of three to adopt better hygiene practices to reduce the incidence of often-fatal diarrheal diseases among children. She added that two popular radio programs - Jember and Biiftuu Jireenya - addressed improving reproductive, maternal, neonatal and child health, reaching a total of 21 million people over the age of three.

PSI has learned that BBC Media Action Ethiopia addresses migration issues to highlight the reality of refugees' daily lives, dispel rumors, inspire hope for the future, and provide information about the risks of unsafe and illegal migration. Ethiopia is one of three countries in our Protecting Independent Media for Effective Development project (PRIMED), in which BBC Media Action is leading a consortium of experts in media for development.

Finally, Dr. Nishu Chaudhary, Country Director of BBC Media Action Ethiopia, explained the different areas where PSI and BBC Media Action Ethiopia can collaborate.
